Join me for lunch and influence research into women’s careers in IT.

28 Sep

Hi everyone

I’m helping out a professor at Loughborough Uni who wants to do some in-depth research into women’s experiences as they pursue a career in IT/tech/digital.

She wants to make sure that she designs her research with reference to actual women’s experiences, so she has asked me to arrange a lunch-time discussion session. We’re going to hold it in Sheffield and the tentative date is 15th October – but we’ll change that to suit people’s diaries if necessary.

Everything discussed will be kept confidential and it will be a great opportunity to influence an important piece of research (and eat a nice lunch in some good company). If you are interested in taking part, please could you either email me (melanie@tigernash.co.uk) or tweet me @melkanarek.

Thanks and look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks Lovelace Lasses

Thanks to all those who put time, effort and thought into the Ada Lovelace Day event in Sheffield. Especially in need of a mention are Mel Kanarek, Helen Harrop, Gill Birchmore, Naddy Tweed and Jag Gill, without whom it wouldn’t have happened.

Thanks also to those of you who made it to the event or gave your virtual support via email, twitter and blogs.

Specific highlights for me were

  • those who said they had been prompted to do their first ever blog in aid of the event like: Sarah Profit’s on Helen Sharman and Chris Baird’s on Martha Lane Fox
  • the sound of chattering and the chance to finally chat to Rebecca Jesson who I’ve seen at GeekUp Sheffield a number of times but never managed to talk to,
  • Tony Kennick’s statistics that suggested Sheffield had achieved the 8th highest number of blogs on the subject worldwide (more to follow from the Technophobia / Finding Ada MashUps I believe), and finally
  • Emma Cooper‘s brilliant knitted moustache for Jag (hopefully to be seen on his twitter profile soon!)

A thank you also to the support from Richard King and his #debill protestors who joined us following their 6pm flashmob outside Sheffield train station.  More information on the Bill’s progress through parliament can be found here.

Deeds not words!

22 Mar

Sometime in late 2009 five women met in a war bunker to plot a technological revolution… Well okay, so it wasn’t a war bunker, there was no plot and maybe we’re not after a revolution but there was definitly a meeting in late 2009 to work out how to get a group going in Sheffield for women who work in, want to work in, are studying or are just interested in technology.

We held the first meeting on the 25th February and plan to hold an event once a month from now on. There’ll also be a forum on here for discussions to take place in between times, and also so that those who are unable to make our meetings can still be part of the conversation.

Our first meeting was a lunchtime social and we were really pleased with the turnout, there were lots of conversations and we met loads of new people lots of whom found out about the event second or third hand, which was really great as this is a low budget affair so we were really glad so many people had taken the time to let others know.

We also held a more formal evening meeting where we gave presentations on issues and heard from the group about what they would like from future events a lot of which we’ll be feeding into the next event
